Many countries celebrate Mother’s Day in the month of May. Traditionally, people think of a mother as a woman who has given birth to a child. Yet, many people have stepped in to mother, “bring up (a child) with care and affection” (Google Dictionary) and should also be appreciated and celebrated as mothers in the month of May and always.

As an example, I am eternally grateful to my husband’s maternal grandmother, Lita, who raised him until he was about 6 years old. She stepped in to bring up Joe with care and affection during the most important years of Joe’s development. I truly believe Joe was the Great man he was, in many ways, thanks to her.

ATTENTION
Pay attention to the mother figures in your life. Maybe it is a biological mother, an adopted mother, a step mother, a godmother, a foster mother, a grandmother, an aunt, a single father who has been both a father and a mother, a parent’s partner, a neighbor, or even a family friend. Who has raised or helped raise you with care and affection? Who has loved you and cared for you and your wellbeing? Who has been a mother to you in your time of need?

INTENTION
Make the intention to acknowledge, be grateful, and express your love to the mother figures in your life during these Mother’s Day celebrations in the month of May and throughout the year.

ACTION
Take Action. Reach out, express your appreciation, and show your love to the mother figures in your life in person, if at all possible, over the phone, via FaceTime, Skype, or at least through email or text. If they are no longer alive or you have no way of getting a hold of them, you can send them positive grateful thoughts through prayer and meditation.
